Light at the Heart of the City
A 600-square-meter large canopy as a luminous connection between the office and the urban space. A pathway that runs between the two poles of work and life leads across the public square in front of the Frankfurt Büro Center, creating a link between the building ensemble and the city.
Details
The high-rise building in the style of classical modernism from the 1970s is actually turned away from the Mainzer Landstraße. However, the construction of a new café opposite the main entrance provided us with the opportunity to open up the forecourt of the 40-story building towards the city space. We created a connection through a shared canopy under which two different uses face each other: the reception area of the high-rise building and the new public café.
As a horizontal light sail, the canopy spans over the glass café pavilion and the area in front of the high-rise building's foyer. In the Foyer of the FBC, it continues as a light ceiling. During the day, the wandering sunlight that falls through the rectangular skylights onto a textile membrane creates a constantly changing play of light patterns on the underside of the canopy. At night, the slender roof, illuminated from the inside, illuminates the forecourt like a luminous scupltur.
